Upcycled Bench

by - October 01, 2017

When you see a beautiful piece of furniture that needs a little, or a lot of love, what do you do? Give it a makeover? Well then this is the right post for you!

I was given this adorable bench & knew immediately I had to give it a new life. So naturally, it sat in my garage for a year or two and then I went to work!

Here's what you'll need:

  • A bench to refinish
  • Some paint
  • Fabric
  • Foam/Padding

I started by fixing up the trunk. There were a few minor issues such as the hinges were wearing out & there was a large crack in the center... yikes! but with a little wood glue & some clamps it was fixed in no time!

After I let the wood glue dry I went to work! I started by painting the bench a beautiful grey color (that we happened to have as leftover sample paint for our house)!

Once it was dry I cut out some foam cushioning for the top of the bench, along with a large bit of fabric & stapled it over the edges of the bench. The bench I have opens up so I staple gunned the fabric to the inside.

Once I got to this point I knew that the bench needed something more, it was a little more bland than I had hoped... so I decided to work with what I had!

I used some of the leftover fabric I had to sew some matching pillows. From there I grabbed some black acrylic paint & added a stripped design to it.

The pillows turned out so great I decided to carry the pattern onto the fabric on the bench! I was careful not to make the black lines too thick & prominent, as I still wanted the bench to have a rustic feel!

I am so happy with the way this bench turned out & with my decision to add some stripes to the canvas fabric! The puppy seems to love this bench just as much as I do :)

Adding a piece like this to your home, that you worked on yourself, is so rewarding! I smile every time I see this bench!

As always I would love to see your similar transformations on instagram @keypsake_treasurs!
